Yves Cloutier est un auteur-compositeur-interprète montréalais dont la musique navigue librement entre folk, country, classique et jazz. À travers cette fusion instinctive des genres, il propose un univers à la fois personnel et évocateur, empreint de mythes, de folklore et d’authenticité. Derrière la complexité de ses compositions se dégage toujours une grande simplicité d’écoute.

Après avoir amorcé sa carrière en solo, il a évolué en duo, en trio, puis au sein de formations aux côtés de Richard et Marie-Claire Séguin, Richard Toupin et plusieurs autres. Il a parcouru les scènes du Québec, du Canada, des États-Unis, de la France et plus récemment, de la Suisse. Compositeur prolifique, il a signé de nombreuses musiques pour le théâtre, la vidéo et le court-métrage, en plus d’être l’auteur de la chanson-thème et de toutes les musiques de la série culte Watatatow, diffusée durant 14 ans.

Un tournant décisif survient avec l’acquisition d’une guitare acoustique à double manche. Accordant chacun des manches différemment en open tuning, il développe un jeu unique de 18 cordes, qu’il explore parfois simultanément. L’ajout de capos, utilisés séparément ou conjointement, engendre des fusions harmoniques inédites qui deviennent l’essence de chacune de ses créations.

ENG | Yves Cloutier is a singer-songwriter-composer based in Montreal. Self-taught, he has developed his own unique musical language, today weaving powerful harmonic combinations into his rich compositions. Intuitively navigating between genres, he offers a tailored experience touched by folk, country, classical and jazz invoking worlds that are both mythical and folkloric. Albeit of an impressive complexity, Yves’ music is presented with the simplicity and authenticity that is well known to him.

He has toured for many years in Quebec, Canada, the United-States and Switzerland, first as a solo act, then as a duo, trio as well as in a group with Richard and Marie-Claire Séguin, Richard Toupin and many others. He has composed musical scores for theater, shorts and TV, most notably the popular series Watatatow for which he wrote the entire soundtrack for 14 years.

His musical universe was completely redefined when he procured himself a double-neck acoustic guitar. He learned to play this new instrument by tuning each neck differently. Both in open tuning, he plays them simultaneously involving all 18 strings. This continuous research often leads him into unknown territory. The use of capos on one or the other neck allows the fusion of stimulating harmonies which is often the starting point for each of his compositions.
